Tetris Through Time Style Guide

The licensing team at Fluid are no strangers to working on some of the most beloved and iconic IPs in gaming - but Tetris is pretty special. Now in its fifth decade of entertaining fans young and old, Tetris remains the best selling video game of all time, amassing well over 500 million sales across virtually every gaming platform there is. At this point, it’s pretty easy to declare Tetris as a timeless experience, bringing fun to millions regardless of the era it’s been played in.

But it’s these eras that the Tetris Company wanted us to celebrate when they approached us to create a style guide - appropriately named Tetris Through Time! They wanted us to showcase the game’s journey from its 80s beginnings, through to the 90s, noughties and ending in the 10s - with a collection of stunning graphics that reflected both the Tetris IP and the fashion of the decades it dominated.

Tetris through the 80's

Our 80s graphics are inspired by the bright, bold and dramatic fashion of the era, with statement pieces awash with colour to draw attention. Large padded shoulders, a signature of the era, emphasised a growing attraction towards geometric shapes and cuts - simultaneously reflected with the launch of popularity of Tetris. Asymmetric styles and contrast were another popular choice in the 80s, similar thematically to the constant stream of conflicting shapes to be matched with one another in the game.

Tetris through the 90's

Whilst retaining the vibrant colours that remained at the forefront of fashion, our 90s graphics have a more casual, minimalist style than the larger than life style of the 80s. We incorporated elements of oversized and stylised patterns and fonts, popularised through sports jerseys, grunge outfits and the rise of Hip Hop. Rave culture is also celebrated, with the addition of neon, blurred and psychedelic Tetris graphics.

Tetris through the 00's

Often described as a global mash up of a decade, our noughties graphics see a fusion of vintage looks, street style and fashions of numerous based subcultures as they rose to prominence. None more so than Hip Hop, which continued its surge in popularity from the 90s. Block colours, high contrast and large scale prints reigned supreme in Hip Hop fashion throughout the noughties, as showcased below.
